Challenge

Visit Humboldt sought to enhance the user experience on their homepage and improve the functionality of their hotel and activity listings. This presented several key challenges:

  • Lack of Engaging Homepage Navigation: The existing homepage lacked an intuitive way for users to explore different regions of Humboldt County and access relevant website content. A more interactive and visually appealing navigation method was needed to improve user engagement.
  • Backend Listing Issues: The backend systems responsible for sorting and filtering hotel and activity listings were experiencing issues, leading to inaccurate and inefficient results. This made it difficult for users to find the information they were looking for and negatively impacted their experience.

Solution

To address these challenges, I implemented the following solutions:

  • Interactive Map Development: I developed an interactive map using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, providing a visually engaging way for users to explore Humboldt County. This involved creating a map that accurately represented the region’s geography and implementing dynamic linking to relevant website sections based on user clicks.
  • Backend Listing Improvements: I implemented several backend improvements to enhance the sorting and filtering of hotel and activity listings. This included developing a robust sorting algorithm to ensure accurate results based on various criteria (price, rating, popularity) and implementing a “sticky post” feature to prioritize specific hotels and maintain their visibility at the top of listings.

Result

The implemented solutions resulted in significant improvements to the Visit Humboldt website:

  • Enhanced User Engagement and Intuitive Exploration: The interactive map provided a visually appealing and intuitive way for users to explore the website and discover different regions of Humboldt County. This significantly increased user engagement and provided a more enjoyable browsing experience.
  • Streamlined Website Navigation: The dynamic linking between the map and website sections streamlined navigation, making it easier for users to find the information they needed quickly. This improved user satisfaction and reduced bounce rates.
  • Accurate and Efficient Listings: The refined sorting algorithm ensured that hotel and activity listings were displayed accurately and efficiently. This empowered users to make informed decisions based on relevant criteria and improved the overall usability of the listings.
  • Increased Visibility for Key Hotels: The “sticky post” feature effectively highlighted important hotels, increasing their visibility and potentially driving more bookings. This provided a valuable marketing tool for Visit Humboldt and their partners.
